In preparation for their two-Test trip to Bangladesh in October, South Africa has picked three spinners: Senuran Muthusamy has been recalled, and Dane Piedt has been given another chance with Keshav Maharaj.
Including Matthew Breetzke, the lone player without a cap among the fifteen, the team was named “for the conditions, we are expecting to greet us” by South Africa red-ball coach Shukri Conrad.
Due to the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, there were concerns over the two World Test Championship matches that were part of the visit.
However, CSA approved the travel on Monday following “an in-loco inspection” that its security assessment team carried out in Chattogram and Dhaka, the locations of the two Tests.
Touring Bangladesh is always challenging. They’ve grown into a strong team at home, and we must be ready for the task ahead. As a result, we have selected a squad to meet us there based on the expected conditions.
Three frontline spinners are available to us; they can all step up when necessary. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone like Senuran, who can be a significant bat and ball player.
We are pretty interested in what he has to give. We have confidence in our team’s depth and adaptability to take on this challenge.”
The fast-bowling options—Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger, Dane Paterson, and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder—keep the three spinners company.
No Lungi Ngidi is there, and there’s no information on whether his fitness is a worry or workload management is at play. He plays in a white-ball series between South Africa and Ireland as part of the UAE tour.
In addition, Anrich Nortje, who has played in the CPL, has not been selected. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen, both on leave, were also not picked.
Memorably, Paterson, 35, and Piedt, 34, based in the US, embarked on South Africa’s Test tour to New Zealand at the beginning of the year even though the SA20 prevented many of their first-choice players from traveling.
Breetzke, a highly regarded 25-year-old top-order batsman who has only participated in eight Twenty20 Internationals during his international career, has also been included.
Breetzke may have a difficult time making his Test debut in Bangladesh, though, given the presence of Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, captain Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, and wicketkeeper-batters Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne.
Ashwell Prince, the batting coach, is also traveling with South Africa. He could not join them on their tour of the West Indies due to personal matters.

With six Tests remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle, South Africa has played six matches thus far. They have won two, lost three, and drawn one Test, putting them in sixth place.
